Kinja'd!!!

As some of you may recall I wrote a post recently about my experience replacing the transmission in my Civic. Three days after replacing the transmission, the engine decided it didn’t like its rod bearings anymore.

That was the final straw.

So I decided to make a terrible financial decision. I couldn’t be any happier.

Nice ride!! My buddy has one and it is fast, feels way faster than my XT with (almost) the same engine.

What a coincidence. I nearly responded to that post with a list of all the things that went wrong with my Civic after I did the headgasket that led me to buy a different car. Decided it was sort of a buzzkill and moved along without comment.

Almost bought a BRZ when that happened, but ended up with a used Mazda3 instead.

Something about Japanese cars versus German cars regarding reliability...

Nice choice! I had one up until November and it’s by far the best enthusiast’s daily driver for the money. And in black, it looks surprisingly grown up—a first for WRX’s!

Mine was not grown up:

Replacing an engine that didn’t like rod bearings with an engine that despises ring lands?

Bold.

this generation is fine for ringlands, it’s the connecting rods that fail.

Fa20dit has connecting rod failure issues?

Fuck

Cool thing, I just talked a guy at work into picking up a new WRX, great cars!

I'm really enjoying it so far. Couldn't ask for much more in a car really.

Yes but mostly only when tuned. They can make really high torque from low rpms on the stock turbo, their con rod ratio isn't great. If you floor them in high gear and low rpm they will bend the rods. The better tuners have learned to purposely limit torque at low rpm to help alleviate the issue.

Yeah I've heard of boost creep at low rpm so I tend to only put power on above 3500rpm anyway.

Why did you get rid of it?

That is certainly safe. The twin scrolls will build big boost even at 2k rpm and that’s where they can get into trouble.

They’ll make 350 lbft there and that’s what you sort of have to limit them to or damage ensues.

Two reasons. 1) I moved to NYC and no longer need a car that does everything, so I replaced it with a designated track car (C6 Vette).

But more importantly, 2) The FA engine has a serious overboosting issue on the racetrack. It only happens on racetracks (not AutoX), and only in 4th/5th gear after the 2nd lap. Basically the turbo spools too quickly and the fuel-cutoff engages for 10-15 seconds while the turbo calms down. Subaru knows the problem exists, but refuses to admit it since it only happens on the racetrack and therefore falls outside the warranty.

You’ll never overboost on public roads, or even on AutoX. It will only happen after 5+ minutes of full-throttle acceleration in higher gears. So as a track car, it’s useless. But as a daily driver/AutoX’er, it’s perfect.

It’s also not exclusive to the FA engine; EJ’s are documented as having the same issue, even in STI tune (but, again, Subaru won’t officially acknowledge it).
